Big Surprise: GOP Bill Would Cut Food Stamps

March 24th, 2011

Buried Provision In House GOP Bill Would Cut Off Food Stamps To Entire Families If One Member Strikes.

As if this is some amazing revelation of how insensitive, immoral, and ideological the Republican leadership is… The American public gets the representation they vote for.

Amplify’d from thinkprogress.org

Now, a group of House Republicans is launching a new stealth attack against union workers. GOP Reps. Jim Jordan (OH), Tim Scott (SC), Scott Garrett (NJ), Dan Burton (IN), and Louie Gohmert (TX) have introduced H.R. 1135, which states that it is designed to “provide information on total spending on means-tested welfare programs, to provide additional work requirements, and to provide an overall spending limit on means-tested welfare programs.”

The bill also includes a provision that would exempt households from losing eligibility, “if the household was eligible immediately prior to such strike, however, such family unit shall not receive an increased allotment as the result of a decrease in the income of the striking member or members of the household.”

This Bill Ends Bailouts- [StrongDems]

April 14th, 2010
YouTube Preview Image

Senator Christopher J. Dodd (chairman of the Senate banking committee, D-Connecticut) lays down the law in this clip.  This talking point is a recap of what he said.

RESPONSE:

This bill ENDS bailouts. There is no bailout provision in this bill.

FOLLOW-UP:

  1. It imposes TOUGHER STANDARDS on large Wall Street firms.
  2. Eliminates the Federal Government’s capacity to bailout individual companies
  3. Write their own liquidation plans, and make them pay for the liquidation (if needed).
  4. President George W. Bush (a Republican, if my memory serves me right) signed this bill into law, not President Obama.

UNCOVERS:

The trick-or-treat Republicans are trying to scare the American people again.

When you hear Republican Senators talking about bailouts, remind them by looking up their voting records (links below), as well as the profits the Government made on those bailouts (links below).

SIDE POINTS:

H.R. 1424: Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008

Slow this down- [StrongDems]

March 18th, 2010

RESPONSE:

Whenever you hear a Republican say, “Slow this down“, they are really saying, “America, take a nap.”

FOLLOW-UP:

Except, of course, when they are in control.  Then all they say is, “don’t ask questions.”

Health bill contains a provision that can’t be repealed- [StrongDems]

March 11th, 2010

Might also be:

  • Senate Health-Care Bill Provision Would Make it Impossible for Future Congresses to Repeal Parts of Bill
  • Independent Medicare Advisory Board creates entirely new rules out of whole cloth

——-

RESPONSE:

This is an example of Republicans lying right through their teeth.   They are playing the American people for chumps, while lining the pockets of their insurance lobbyist friends.

FOLLOW-UP:

The Independent Medicare Advisory Board can be repealed by a vote of three-fifths of the Senate.  And if you missed the name, it says ADVISORY.

The Board develops Medicare cost-saving proposals which Congress must adopt unless it can come up with other ways to save an equivalent amount.

The commission would not be allowed to change Medicare eligibility or benefits, and its ability to change payment rates would be limited.

UNCOVERS:

Republicans will lie, distort, and use fear in order to kill any legislation they disagree with (or are being paid off to vote down).  The key here is to use the word LYING or LIE.

DO NOT use the words, hypocrisy, distortion, fabrication, exaggeration, or misinform- they are too soft.

People understand what a LIE is. Many will tune out for all of the long-winded explanation of how they’re wrong, and facts and figures often merge together.  In the end, what is important is they walk away knowing that it is a LIE.

SIDE POINTS:

CBO analysis estimated that the commission as described in the bill would reduce spending by $23 billion through 2019.

Let’s scrap the bill and start over- [StrongDems]

March 4th, 2010

Response:

You have to ask yourself, would you go to a Doctor that doesn’t believe in Medicine? Why would you listen to Republicans who don’t believe in Government?

Follow-up:

Republicans know that killing Health Insurance Reform will bankrupt the government. And that’s their goal.
