Democrats Need to Learn the Art of Negotiating

November 15th, 2010

It’s clobbering time!

Let’s face it, Democrats have been absolutely horrible at negotiating.  Maybe we should be spending some more time watching the World Series of Poker.

Democrats foolishly confuse DEBATE and NEGOTIATE.  These are completely separate Sciences.

Democrats spend large amounts of time trying to articulate the intricacies of why their plans have merit, while listening to the criticism, waiting to address them one by one.

Why don’t they want to negotiate?

The other side doesn’t care about the debate.  Once they have stated their objections, they have already established the base of where they will negotiate from.  Trying to move them from this position is almost pointless, since they view compromise as weakness, while Democrats view it as Democracy.

Mainly it is because the modern-day Republican party doesn’t believe in Government, PERIOD. The policies that they do come up with are a result of selling out to the political contributors (mostly Corporations and the wealthy) just so they can stay in power doing nothing.

But we can learn something from them.

Negotiating comparison:

The GOP starts from a “we will not compromise our principals” approach (and usually stays there).

The Dems start from a ‘we will compromise our principals’ & ‘meet me half way’ point, look to our nemesis for approval, then end by giving up 95% of what the GOP wants.

UNCOVERS:

Consistently, the current Democratic leadership has been reactionary, soft, timid, weak, scared, easily distracted, and in the end feckless.  Now, even worse than that… they start all negotiations from a point of compromise!

This is the complete opposite of how the Republicans negotiate.

When asked a question about Social Security, Health Care, Tariffs, Medicare, Military Spending, Taxes, Labor, Trade, etc., you need to say the following:

“We will not compromise our principals!”

You can’t make a stand if you let your OPPONENT define what YOU stand for!

When you have already compromised your principals before you even get to the negotiating table, your opponent will roll right over you, and will know how to use your timidity against you in any future PR war.

FOLLOW-UP:

1) After so many years of crappy, half-measured legislation, LEARN FROM IT!

2) DO NOT, I repeat, NEVER indicate that you are willing to negotiate your position.  In fact, insist that your OPPONENT needs to Compromise THEIR position.

3) Answer questions with pointed questions.

Example:

  • Question: “Are you willing to negotiate with Republicans on the Bush Tax Cuts?”
  • Answer: “We will not compromise our principals.  We have huge Trickle-down Republican deficits. Who are you going to tax & get money from, the already squeezed middle class, the working poor?”

Giving Rights to Terrorists- [StrongDems]

March 5th, 2010

Response (religion frame):

Only God can take away a person’s rights without a trial, not the Republican party.  Human rights come from Nature, not some political game for the cameras.

Response (law frame):

Does X think that, with a stroke of a pen in Washington, Government can take away anyone’s right to blink?  The Constitution was made to limit Government power, not the other way around, X.  I suggest you read it again.

Response (other):

This isn’t about Terrorists, and it isn’t about Rights, and X knows it.  It’s about Government power.  This is about making sure Government Bureaucrats can’t take yours freedoms away.

Follow-up:

Not only are you changing 212 years of American Constitutional Tradition, but you are immorally taking away the “rights of man” (use air quotes) by the stroke of a pen in Washington.  Do you really want us to be more like Tehran?  As we have learned, a Government bureaucrat on a witch hunt can do a lot of harm.  Is McCarthyism now the policy of the Republican party??

Side Points:

The Constitution limits the ability for our Government to take AWAY rights from all people.

Our founders (like Jefferson and Madison) created our Constitution to make sure that every dictator, king, or tyrannical despot know… ALL People (our Constitution never says ‘Citizens’) naturally have certain inalienable rights above Government, and shall not be infringed.

Fight the lies: Start your engines

March 4th, 2010

Hey everyone!  In the next few weeks, I will be launching this site, StrongDems.com, as a place to get the latest Talking Points from a Democratic perspective.

“Talking Points” are often seen as a strategic informational attack on a target topic, typically to propagandize, specifically using the technique of argumentum ad nauseam, i.e. continuous repetition within media outlets until accepted as fact.  They may not necessarily be factual in any way, shape, or form, because they are tools used in information warfare.

The Republican Party (GOP) has been extremely good at this over the last 15-20 years.  We have moved into the sound bite era, and they are winning the battle.  Mostly because they are well-organized (in this regard), and because the conservative mindset is to look for a father figure, and follow the leader.

That is NOT what we are looking to do here.

StrongDems.com will be a Blog/Twitter/Buzz delivery system for our thoughts on topics that come up daily.  These talking points will be factual, not simply to score points.  I’ll try and hold firm on the ‘Daily’ part of the title as well.  Our hope is that we can give you the tools, in short form, to combat the misinformation war that is being fought from one side.

When it comes down to the 15 second sound bite, you need to counter-punch without need for an explanation.  If you are explaining your position, you’ve already lost.  We Democrats have lost this ability over the years, and being tough is no longer a question.  If you are not angry about what is going on in Washington, you haven’t been paying attention.  Fighting Dems need to stand up for our core principals, explain them clearly, and show that we are the Party of the Middle-Class.

The Democratic Party has a rich heritage, a distinct set of core values, and a commitment to community.  Together we can make this site a success.  We’ll be expanding it very soon, so bear with us while we get the site up and running.

Thanks!
