Republican Shangri-La: Society A La Carte, $75 at a time

October 8th, 2010

Unless your home burned down over the last few days and you haven’t seen the news, I am sure you have heard the story of a small Tennessee town where fire protection is apparently optional, and a fellow named Gene Cranick.

This is the Conservative Society model that the Free-Marketeers have been peddling for 30 years, folks!  Follow this logic down its logical path: Would the firefighters would have done anything if there were people in the house?

We did this all before, after an extensive fire in Philadelphia in 1736, Founding Father (you know, the ones the GOP always uses as a prop) Benjamin Franklin established the first all-volunteer fire brigade which was known as The Union Fire company.  Being from Boston, where they had Mutual Fire Societies (or “Fire Clubs”), he saw how “Fire Clubs” existed solely for the protection of its members, not the entire community.  There were placards placed on houses to designate what insurance affiliation you paid for.  If the wrong group of fire fighters was called, sorry charlie, your house is gone.  Ben Franklin wanted organizations that would battle all fires, regardless of whose property was burning.

So, what’s the response of the right-wing?

“Of Course, The Firefighters Should Have Let The Guy’s House Burn Down”

No Pay, no Spray.

UNCOVERS:

Conservatives are just showing how dangerously nearsighted, selfish, and immoral they truly are.

Republicans , once again, show they believe everything in life = money.

Isn’t community also a Christian value?

So now the Republicans are in favor of the benefits of taxation?

America is a nation of WE, not a nation of ME.  We live in a society and we’re all interdependent.  Your house catches on fire, all of our houses can catch on fire.

Most “Great Fires” only started with ONE house.

SIDE POINTS:

This is like the scene right out of Goodfellas:

Health Care: You’re sick? %^&* you, pay me.

You lost your job? %^&* you, pay me

Some reckless Banker stole your money? %^&* you, pay me.

China put Cadmium in your kids toys? %^&* you, pay me.

Your house is on fire? %^&* you, pay me.

Brainwashing, Destruction, Disagreements, and Upgrading

June 11th, 2010

RESPONSE:

Conservatives always seem to go coo-coo for cocoa puffs when someone disagrees with them on something.

Either the person is said to be “brain washed”, or they are personally working to “destroy” the country with their “Liberal” views.

It never occurs to them that they could either:

  • a) BE WRONG
  • b) Simply DISAGREE
  • c) The have to UPGRADE their software

Using the politics of fear (emotion) and lies (manipulation), which is the bread and butter of the Republican party, is the very DEFINITION of brain-washing.

The Republicans are also fundamentally opposed to anyone else having the right to govern.  That is why they always make everything the Democrats do sound like it is the end of the world.

As Stephen Colbert says, “Reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

FOLLOW-UP:

FDR ran the original version 1.0 upgrade (infrastructure, manufacturing, unionization, social security, etc.), which built the middle-class in this country.

President Reagan came in with version 2.0 (free-market monopoly capitalism), which this country has been running on over the last 30 years, and has proven to be a gigantic failure.

The software caused crashes, tore apart the middle-class, killed manufacturing, gave corporations more rights than people, and made the top 1% exceptionally wealthy.

Progressive Democrats are trying to take the best from both versions and upgrade to version 3.0, but are constantly blocked by the religion of 2.0 thinking.

Note: When Conservatives use the word “Liberal” they often follow it with the word “Feminist.”  Interesting…

UNCOVERS:

Modern Republicans have a need to always be in power, they cannot handle issue complexity, altruism, nor the loss of control.

The ability to reason, think independently, or change one’s beliefs based on facts, is exactly the opposite of cult-like mind control.

SIDE POINTS:

Brainwashing (mind control):
Refers to a process in which a group or individual “systematically uses unethically manipulative methods to persuade others to conform to the wishes of the manipulator(s), often to the detriment of the person being manipulated”. The term has been applied to any tactic, psychological or otherwise, which can be seen as subverting an individual’s sense of control over their own thinking, behavior, emotions or decision making.

Theories of brainwashing and of mind control were originally developed to explain how totalitarian regimes appeared to succeed in systematically indoctrinating prisoners of war through propaganda and torture techniques.

Libertarians, Civil Rights, BP, and Rand Paul

May 24th, 2010

RESPONSE:

Rand Paul isn’t a racist.  His ideology, however, is the fertile ground that allows disability discrimination, gender bias, and racism to flourish.

Libertarianism, by definition, is about being selfish. Which is why it fits perfectly with racism, inequality, and Corporate greed.

The Constitution, by definition of it’s preamble, establishes “We the People” as a Community of the Commons.

The U.S. is about US, not just the desires of the most wealthy, or powerful.

FOLLOW-UP:

Private businesses get special benefits and protections that you and I don’t get.

When you register your business, you are essentially setting up a contract with the Government for these benefits and protections.

You can’t on the one hand want tax-deductions and limited liability, for example, but not accept the ability for Government to regulate commerce (explicitly given by the Constitution), prevent discrimination, or be willing for society to ensure business is not working against the public good (for example, that baby pacifiers don’t have lead in them).

Libertarianism is at the core of why BP failed, and continues to fail at preventing this oil disaster.

When the free-market is allowed to determine their own rules and regulations, this is what you get.  Depressions, Fraud, and Spills.

UNCOVERS:

America was founded as a nation of WE, not ME.

Ayn Rand, Rand Paul’s namesake and the fundamentalist failed ideology that followed, was a mistaken belief that all people and businesses are naturally good, operate to the benefit of society (the lift all boats philosophy) and the market will naturally fix itself if anything is out of whack, is dangerously ridiculous.

If you want a free-market, move to Somalia.
