Mr. President, Where Are You? Extend Unemployment, period

November 19th, 2010

On Thursday, House Republicans killed the extension of benefits for the long-term unemployed, roughly 4 million people.

That’s right, about 4 million people will have to now worry about where their next meal will come from because the millionaire Republicans wanted to play politics.

FOLLOW-UP:

Where are you, Mr. President?

We realize you are Mr. Conflict Avoidance, but do you and the Democrats want to feel important or do you want to pass good policy that actually helps people?
You should have immediately called for a press conference.

WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY?

You vote down extending unemployment, yet you are fighting for extending tax breaks for billionaires?

Are you kidding me?

We’re dealing with people who are losing the ability to pay for food, health insurance, and staying in their home, and the other having 3% more in their offshore savings account.

This money goes right back into the economy, not some $20 million dollar painting, or a 7th European vacation home.

This is real!

I am fighting for the American people.

I am fighting for the middle class.
Who are you folks fighting for?

UNCOVERS:

If you are unwilling to fight for the American people, will people go out and fight for you in 2012?

You have to be out there, responding from the bully pulpit, EVERY DAY!

If people don’t SEE you fighting for them, it sends a message that you don’t care.

It makes you look weak and distant.

When you look strong, the Democratic Party looks strong.

Be an FDR!

How many Presidents had foreign-born parents?

September 15th, 2010

RESPONSE:

Barack Obama is the 7th President with a foreign-born parent.

Why doesn’t it make any difference AT ALL?  A little something called the 14th Amendment.

14th Amendment, Section 1, as establishing that all individuals born on US soil are citizens.

The 14th Amendment is the very same thing that allowed Senator John McCain and Mitt Romney to run for President.

President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, his mother was a citizen, and his birth certificate is HERE.

He’s a citizen, period, end of story.  If you disagree, you are a complete moron, a fanatical nut-job, and that’s me being extremely polite.

FOLLOW-UP:

Any wonder why the repeal of the 14th amendment is a Republican talking point in an election year? Nah, must be a coincidence.

Do you think that if he wasn’t a qualified candidate for the Presidency, that John McCain or Hillary Clinton wouldn’t have used opposition research to win?  It must be some conspiracy.

UNCOVERS:

The Republicans are attempting to use this non-issue to foment bigotry by characterizing the president as somehow invalid, or worse an “other.”

It is also the reason why a majority 46% of Republicans still think the President is a Muslim.

Let’s be clear, the position they are taking is so dramatically illogical, so far outside or reality, so self-delusional, that it can;t be anything else but racism, bigotry, and ideological radicalism.

Nothing this President could do would be able to satisfy them. He could show pictures, movies, footprints, and bloodwork documentation, but they would still say it was fake.

SIDE POINTS:

Short form vs. long form certificate:
A “certification of birth” is also known as a short-form birth certificate.  The Department of Health releases an official short-form of non-private information, but retains information like Doctor, addresses, etc. privately.

The long-form is not a legal document in any way shape or form.  It is drawn up by the hospital and includes additional information such as birth weight and parents’ hometowns.

How about a home birth?

Pretty much, those footprint documents are actually nothing more than a souvenir meant for scrapbooks.  You can’t use it to get a Driver’s License, for example.  The legal official short-form is used.

Since the Hawai’i State DOH gets so many ridiculous requests for this info, they have created a website for all of the wackadoodles out there:
Their official statements are here:

Supreme Court:
US v. WONG KIM ARK (1898)- the 14th Amendment guaranteed citizenship to all persons born in the United States, regardless of their ethnic heritage

The foregoing considerations and authorities irresistibly lead us to these conclusions: The fourteenth amendment affirms the ancient and fundamental rule of citizenship by birth within the territory, in the allegiance and under the protection of the country, including all children here born of resident aliens, with the exceptions or qualifications (as old as the rule itself) of children of foreign sovereigns or their ministers, or born on foreign public ships, or of enemies within and during a hostile occupation of part of our territory, and with the single additional exception of children of members of the Indian tribes owing direct allegiance to their several tribes. The amendment, in clear words and in manifest intent, includes the children born within the territory of the United States of all other persons, of whatever race or color, domiciled within the United States. Every citizen or subject of another country, while domiciled here, is within the allegiance and the protection, and consequently subject to the jurisdiction, of the United States. His allegiance to the United States is direct and immediate, and, although but local and temporary, continuing only so long as he remains within our territory, is yet, in the words of Lord Coke in Calvin’s Case, 7 Coke, 6a, ‘strong enough to make a natural subject, for, if he hath issue here, that issue is a natural-born subject’; and his child, as said by Mr. Binney in his essay before quoted, ‘If born in the country, is as much a citizen as the natural-born child of a citizen, and by operation of the same principle.’

And:

To hold that the fourteenth amendment of the constitution excludes from citizenship the children born in the United States of citizens or subjects of other countries, would be to deny citizenship to thousands of persons of English, Scotch, Irish, German, or other European parentage, who have always been considered and treated as citizens of the United States.

Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Michael Weiner Savage, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh

September 2nd, 2010

RESPONSE:

The people who are so emotionally charged up about Reverend Wright being a racist are the very same people who have been listening to hateful, bigoted, racist, misogynists like Rush Limbaugh, Michael Weiner Savage, and Glenn Beck.

FOLLOW-UP:

To use their accusation of President Obama: “How could they listen to him [them] spew this stuff for so many years if they didn’t agree with him [them]?”

Using your logic: If you listen to them, you must agree with and defend everything they say.

UNCOVERS:

Right-wing talk radio and Fox News shows are just as vile, hateful, bigoted, and racist as any carefully edited clip you find from Reverend Wright.  The difference is, since those Republicans agree with them, it’s “truthiness.”

You can find a sound-bite from every single Michael Weiner Savage, Glenn Beck, or Rush Limbaugh show.

SIDE POINTS:

Rev. Wright’s expanded 9/11 speech:

“I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday did anybody else see or hear him? He was on FOX News, this is a white man, and he was upsetting the FOX News commentators to no end, he pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, he pointed out that what Malcolm X said when he was silenced by Elijah Mohammad was in fact true, he said Americas chickens, are coming home to roost.”

“We took this country by terror away from the Sioux, the Apache, Arikara, the Comanche, the Arapaho, the Navajo. Terrorism.

“We took Africans away from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism.

“We bombed Grenada and killed innocent civilians, babies, non-military personnel.

“We bombed the black civilian community of Panama with stealth bombers and killed unarmed teenage and toddlers, pregnant mothers and hard working fathers.

“We bombed Qaddafi’s home, and killed his child. Blessed are they who bash your children’s head against the rock.

“We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living. We bombed a plant in Sudan to pay back for the attack on our embassy, killed hundreds of hard working people, mothers and fathers who left home to go that day not knowing that they’d never get back home.

“We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye.

“Kids playing in the playground. Mothers picking up children after school. Civilians, not soldiers, people just trying to make it day by day.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff that we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.

Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people we have wounded don’t have the military capability we have. But they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that.”

Fun and easy… A quick note on Taxes

August 27th, 2010

RESPONSE:

The way the Government pays for the services it provides is by taxation.  That is how it works!

Taxes aren’t bad, they are the cost of a society that provides infrastructure, courts, police, fire, military, and education.

The Republicans want a “Credit Card Government“, and their tax plans doesn’t even cover the minimum payment.

FOLLOW-UP:

People often say, “Tax and Spend Democrats.”  To that I respond, that’s how it’s supposed to work!  WE the People determine through our elected representative the things that WE, as a society, determine are important services to provide.  Then WE the government raise that money through TAXES.  Simple enough.

For the last 30 years, and specifically under Reagan and Bush, we have the “Borrow and Spend Republicans” model of economics.  This is where we provide services to our nation, but have reduced the amount of money Government raises to pay for them (taxes).  That is what is called a Deficit, where we borrow to make up the difference.

The bigger problem is, we pay interest on that debt, and it grows bigger and bigger every year if we don’t fix it.

UNCOVERS:

Lowering taxes DOES NOT WORK. We’ve been doing that… how is that working?

Since lowering taxes in the 1980′s, our deficits have increased, our middle-class has shrunk, wages have been flat, and the rich have gotten obscenely wealthy.

We need to collect at least as much in taxes as we spend each year.  We’re talking simple math here, folks.

The bottom line is: SERVICES = TAXES

SIDE POINTS:

Hicksian Demand Function

Supply side economics in a nutshell

Reagan dropped the top tax rate from 70% (which most never ever paid) to 28% (which the rich don’t even pay now).

EXTENDING the Bush Tax Cuts or ENDING the Reagan Tax Cuts – [Strong Dems Talking Points]

August 10th, 2010

RESPONSE:

If you want to cut the deficit, let the Bush tax cuts expire.

The Republicans keep saying that the Tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans WILL bring economic prosperity.  I hate to tell them this, but the Bush tax cuts have already been in place for the last 10 years!

How is that working out, middle-class?

The GOP slogan is: Give to the Rich, and Continue to Increase the Deficit.

What we have seen is the richest 1% have done exceptionally well over the last 10+ years, while the rest of us worker bees (99%) have been experiencing a recession.

FOLLOW-UP:

What the Republicans are fighting for is to continue the policies that have NOT been working, dumping the debt on the middle-class, favoring the already rich, and then expect us to thank them for doing it!

Democrats are only looking to allow the tax waver to expire on the very wealthiest Americans, who don’t need a tax cut, don’t deserve a tax cut, and don’t grow the economy with their tax cut.

Taxes rates for the wealthiest Americans are at some of the lowest they have ever been.  They are not hurting, believe me.

Worse than that, many of the wealthiest Americans are making money from investment income (money from money), not producing a product, not providing a service, and not even lending or investing in small businesses.  The GOP is fighting for Paris Hilton’s ability to sit by the pool, getting the dividend check, on which they pay about 15-20% tax.  What’s your tax rate?  Does that seem fair?

THE REAL ISSUE:

Before the 1st Great Depression, Republicans slashed the top marginal Tax rate, which lead to a bubble and a bust. From the 1930s through the 1960s, the top marginal tax rate was about 90%.  During that time, America had a strong middle-class, and there were no economic meltdowns, bubbles, or busts.  Reagan then slashed the top marginal tax rates to around 20%, followed by Bush Sr. who cut that rate to 15%.  Since then, all that followed were bubbles and meltdowns, resulting in the destruction of the middle class.

What we should be talking about is rolling back the Reagan Tax Cuts!

UNCOVERS:

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

The something for nothing Republicans seem to be at it again, trying to fool hard working Americans into giving more of their money to the very rich.

The Republican party, and many ConservaDems, are directly in the pockets of the wealthiest Americans.  There is a reason for that… they are the only one’s that still have the money to buy their votes!

The economy is a Pie, and the pie is only so big.  When a couple of people are taking more and more of that pie, it means that there is that much less for the rest of us.

If the tax rates constantly favor the rich, rather than the productive middle-class, you put the entire cost of our country on those without the means to pay for it.

It’s like going out to dinner with your rich brother, you had bread sticks, he had lobster, and at the end he gets up and leaves you with the bill.

SIDE POINTS:

-51.8% of the tax cuts are targeted to the top one percent.

-Call them “Tax Waivers” instead of “Tax Cuts.”

-The Bush tax cuts were given a 10-year expiration (sunset provision) because they increased the deficit, and you can’t do that without paying for them without violating the Byrd Rule for anything that “would increase the deficit for a fiscal year beyond those covered by the reconciliation measure.”

-Federal tax revenues tend to expand naturally (albeit slower) because of:

  • Population growth
  • Long-term general economic growth
  • Inflation
